Patchwork needlebooks made for my crafty friends ♥

Today I'd like to show you what I had stitched for my crafty girlfriends as holiday gifts this year... Patchwork needlebooks!

I followed an awesome tutorial by my talented friend, Amy of nanaCompany. You can find the tute here.  It's super adorable and highly recommended project!!

For the inside (needle holding pages) I did not have good felt sheets on hand (100% wool felts are probably the best to store needles)... So instead, I used 100% cotton batting (I selected the thickest batting I had on hand).  It may not be the best option available, but hopefully it works!

Reverse side of the needlebooks.

And above image is the "genuine" needlebook that Amy of nanaCompany had made for me recently. (Check out this post for our first get together!)  As I immediately fell in love with her work, I decided to make a couple more for my girlfriends... Hope my crafty friends like it as much as I liked mine!

Sewing for my newborn nephew♪

When my nephew was born in October, I was so happy that I immediately began stitching his initial and birth date onto a piece of linen...

... to create this simple patchwork drawstring bag.

Then I whipped up these handmade bibs for him...

Actually I wanted to keep on stitching more handmade goodies for the cutest baby boy but due to the lack of time... I instead rushed to our local Target store and bought more baby stuff! lol

Here is what I got from our local Target store for my baby nephew. (Oh and the chocolates are for the new mom and dad!)

I packed everything up and shipped to my youngest brother's family who lives in Tokyo. Hope the baby likes the gift!

Puffy Ponytail Bows made from my book ♥

I stayed up late last night to put together these "puffy ponytail bows" for my oldest girl. As you may already know from my previous post, my fourteen year old loves pastel colors, hence she selected these fabrics.

These were made for my daughter and her friends. I had to rush to make these last night because she wanted to bring these to school on Monday morning for some sort of school activity. (And today is Sunday)!

Here's the view of the back side of the ponytail bows...

The project is featured in my book, Zakka Handmades

Handmade Bow Pouch for the teenage girl ♪

I've been making things here and there, yet I just haven't had a chance to post pics on my blog with the start of the holiday madness!  Let me quickly show you this handmade bow pouch that I whipped up over the Thanksgiving weekend per request of my fourteen year old daughter.

Actually, it was made for a good friend of my daughter as a birthday gift. As always, my daughter selected the fabrics (She loves pastel pink!)

Pattern is my original.

I like to add a small embellishment ball to the zipper pull...

A birthday gift is complete with a Starbucks gift card inside of course!

Of course now I need to make two more of the same pouch for two of my own girls!

My Color Wheel Dresden Mini Quilt and Happy Thanksgiving♥

Here's my recent finish. Color wheel dresden patchwork mini quilt! Check out my earlier post on how to make these patchwork dresden plates if you're interested.

You may recall this color wheel dresden patchwork that I stitched up a while ago... It has been sitting on my sewing table waiting to be quilted, binded and finished.  I'm so happy that I was able to tick this off from my work-in-progress list of things to do... Phew!

As for quilting, I decided to go with diagonal lines that radiate in all directions from the center out.

Then I stitched the center circle on top of the dresden "wheel". The gray x white polka dots print I used is Linen Mochi Dot by Momo from Moda.

For the binding, I selected pink and white gingham check.

I'm happy with the outcome❣

This mini measures approximately 18" x 18" or 45 cm x 45 cm.  I plan to add this to our "mini quilt collection wall" a.k.a our kitchen wall in our house... lol!

On the other note, I recently visited momen plus, my fave fabric shop here in Torrance, CA, with my sweetest sewing friends, Amy of nanaCompany and Jennifer of SunnyinCal!FYI... Amy's first sewing book is coming out soon and Jennifer just released her first quilt pattern! Yay to my talented friends!!

As always, I wanted to buy everything in the shop, but I tried very hard to narrow down my purchase to these fat quarters... Aren't they lovely?

Look! I even got handmade gifts from my friends!!! This happiest patchwork zipper pouch filled with bunch of cosmetic goodies was received from Jennifer. (Actually this photo was taken after my oldest girl snatched the prettiest lip gloss from the gift!)  Thank you so much Jenn for your generosity. Love this!!

And this sweetest needlebook (with my initial handstitched...awww) was received from Amy.  Thank you so much for such a thoughtful handmade gift, Amy!! It's too pretty to use!!

From left to right: me, Jennifer, and Amy

After we shopped for fabrics, we went to the bakery next door and each had big slice of cake together... Ha ha! Thanks for the super fun afternoon, ladies♥

And to my fellow sewing/blogging friends, I wish you have a happy Thanksgiving with your loved ones♥

DIY Ironing Board Makeover ♪DIY

It was about time to replace my old, stained, and burned ironing board cover to a new one. And you know what I mean if you see the below image...

Ewwww yuck!

So I rummaged through my drawers to find my secret weapon: a staple gun!

So here's how I put together my DIY ironing board.  I cover a thick cork board with layers of fabrics and batting in this order: upcycled fleece, insulated batting, and the exterior fabric. The cork board is cut to fit the "baby changing" surface of our chest. (We used the chest top when our girls were babies).

Carefully stretch all three layers taut. Use staple gun to hold all layers to the back side of the board like this.

Ta-da! I'm so happy with the outcome!

Here's how my updated ironing area looks like in the corner of our kitchen/family room a.k.a. my crafting area!

I couldn't sew a single thing this week (*sighs*)... but I managed to stitch a few crochet stars!

The pattern is from this awesome book filled with fab ideas!

As always, I stitch in my parked car while I wait for our girls' after school activities and such...

Today, I'd like to introduce you to a talented Japanese artist and illustrator, Mr. Shuji Nishimura, who is based here in Southern California.

He is the illustrator of this book cover!

Illustrator: Shuji Nishimura
Author: Dr. Napoli Fiatro St. Croix
Publisher: Create Space Independent Publishing Platform (2014)

He has won various titles as chalk artist, including this amazing piece of art, Beatles, which won the first place Best in Festival at 2014 Pasadena Chalk Festival.

It's exciting for me to see such impressive work of my fellow Japanese artists!
